From Office to Opportunity: 70% of Assets Repurposed
  • Case Study

6.9 tons of material have been removed from a real estate development company in San Francisco, CA, and of that, nearly three-quarters of waste was kept out of landfills!

Objective

Over the course of three days, Greener Source successfully removed 6.94 tons of office furniture from a locally based Commercial real estate company. From this single floor project, we prioritized reuse—the most impactful form of waste diversion.

Challenge(s) & Solution

The decommission included the removal of over 270 office furniture items (88 of those items came from 15 conference rooms) including soft seating, workstations, conference chairs and more. All the items remain in great condition, resulting in all the inventory available for resale. By assessing each item carefully during the decommission process, the maximum number of eligible items, due to quality, were kept out of landfill.

“Recycling isn’t the only path to sustainability. Prioritizing reuse—through resale and donation—extends the life of valuable assets, supports local communities, and keeps materials out of landfill. It’s a practical, impactful approach to responsible decommissioning.”

Challenge(s) & Solution

While no materials from this project were recycled, 70% of the assets diverted from landfill were repurposed through resale and donation, reinforcing our commitment to extending the life cycle of furniture and equipment. Notably, 21.6% of the assets (1.5 tons) were donated to Futures Explored, a nonprofit based in Concord, CA that supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
